East Coastway & Marshlink Drivers Eye View

The journey begins on the hourly Southern service from Brighton to Ashford, Kent, aboard a two-car class 171 diesel multiple unit. The train runs fast to Eastbourne, stopping only at Lewes and Polegate before reversing at Eastbourne and continuing along the coast to Hastings, calling at Bexhill and St Leonards Warrior Square. Beyond Ore, where the third rail ends, the service runs along the single line through Rye and across the flat, open expanse of Romney Marsh, stopping at Appledore and the staggered platforms of Ham Street before reaching Ashford International.

Returning to Lewes, we board a three-car class 377 electric multiple unit for the scenic branch to Seaford. The train calls at Newhaven Town and Newhaven Harbour before the line becomes single track, running along the coast through Bishopstone into the terminus at Seaford. The latter two stations still feature classic “Big Four” Southern Railway architecture, providing a glimpse into the line’s historic character.

Along both routes, the DVD captures the journey from the driver’s cab, offering a full view of the track, signalling, and coastal scenery. The combination of diesel and electric traction highlights the variety of operation on this part of the Southern network, from mainline express running to quieter branch line travel.
