F1 2019 is a racing simulation game developed by Codemasters Birmingham and published by Codemasters. It was officially released on June 27, 2019, for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. The game is the twelfth title in Codemasters’ Formula One series and the eleventh main installment, building upon the foundation laid by its predecessors with enhanced realism and expanded content. It was also made available in a special Legends Edition three days earlier, which featured additional content celebrating iconic drivers from Formula 1 history.
The game features all 21 circuits, 20 drivers, and 10 teams from the 2019 FIA Formula One World Championship. For the first time in the series, F1 2019 also included the full 2018 FIA Formula 2 Championship, allowing players to experience the feeder series with drivers like George Russell and Lando Norris. The game introduced a new narrative-driven career mode that began in F2, where players could shape their reputation before moving up to F1. It also featured improved visuals, night lighting, and a more refined multiplayer experience, including customizable liveries and league creation.
Promotion for F1 2019 emphasized its early release—two months ahead of the traditional F1 game launch window—allowing players to dive into the season while it was still underway. Codemasters released trailers showcasing the game’s enhanced graphics, new features, and the inclusion of F2. The Legends Edition was promoted with special content featuring Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost, including classic cars and exclusive challenges. The marketing campaign targeted both hardcore F1 fans and newcomers, highlighting the game’s authenticity and accessibility.
Reception to F1 2019 was largely positive. Critics praised the game’s handling model, visual improvements, and the addition of Formula 2 as a meaningful expansion of the career experience. The rivalry system and narrative elements in the early stages of the career mode were seen as engaging, though some felt they could have been developed further. Multiplayer stability and the introduction of customizable leagues were also well received. While some minor bugs and AI inconsistencies were noted, the overall consensus was that F1 2019 represented a significant step forward for the series.
F1 2019 remained available on digital storefronts until March 2022, when it and several other older Codemasters F1 titles were delisted without official explanation, likely due to licensing expirations following Codemasters’ acquisition by Electronic Arts. Despite its removal, the game is still remembered fondly by fans for its polished gameplay, deep career mode, and the introduction of F2 content. It served as a strong entry in the franchise and laid the groundwork for future improvements in F1 2020 and beyond.
