Samara (from January 27, 1935 to January 25, 1991 - Kuibyshev) is a city in the Middle Volga region of Russia, the center of the Volga economic region and the Samara region, forms the Samara city district. It is located on the left low-lying bank of the Saratov reservoir opposite the Samarskaya Luka, at the confluence of the Samara (hence the name of the city) and Sok rivers. For the first time, the name of the Samara River was mentioned in the notes of the secretary of the Arab embassy and traveler Ahmed ibn Fadlan (921) as "Samur".
Samara has one of the longest river embankments in Russia and the tallest railway station building in Europe. In addition, the area named after. Kuibyshev is the largest square in Europe. In 2018, the city hosted matches of the FIFA World Cup.
