Midland Mainline was a UK train operating company that provided long-distance services on the Midland Main Line between 1996 and 2007. Formed during rail privatisation and operated by National Express, the company linked London St Pancras with key cities in the East Midlands and South Yorkshire. History
The franchise began on 28 April 1996, taking over the former British Rail InterCity Midland division. Midland Mainline modernised its fleet and improved service quality, gaining a reputation for punctual services and attentive onboard hospitality. The introduction of refurbished rolling stock and brand-led marketing helped strengthen its profile during the early years of privatisation. However, as the franchise structure evolved, the operation was combined into the larger East Midlands franchise, and in November 2007 services were transferred to East Midlands Trains under Stagecoach.

Midland Mainline operated fast and semi-fast services between London St Pancras and destinations including Leicester, Derby, Nottingham, Sheffield, and Leeds. The company played a key role in connecting the capital with the East Midlands and Yorkshire, offering a competitive alternative to road travel. The St Pancras to Sheffield route was the flagship service, forming a vital north–south corridor before the redevelopment of St Pancras station for Eurostar and the later introduction of electrification projects further south.
