Fatal subway track fall at Hunting Park Station under investigation
A man has died after falling from a subway platform and being struck by a train at a Philadelphia station in the early hours of Wednesday, authorities have confirmed.
Philadelphia police said Terrell Burton, 41, was fatally injured at the SEPTA Broad Street Line’s Hunting Park Station at around 1:30am. Emergency services were called to the scene, where the city’s fire department later pronounced him dead at 2:03am.
According to SEPTA, surveillance footage shows Burton entering the station at approximately 12:30am. The transit authority said he fell onto the southbound tracks about an hour later, shortly before being hit by a train operating through the station.
SEPTA clarified that the train involved was a work train rather than a passenger service, noting that Broad Street Line subway services stop running at 12:30am. Police had initially reported that Burton was struck after exiting an arriving subway, but that account was later corrected following the review of video evidence.
The circumstances surrounding the incident are now being examined by the Philadelphia Police Department’s crash investigation division, which is continuing its inquiry.
