An investigation is under way after a young person was struck and killed by a train at a level crossing in Leicestershire.

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) confirmed the fatal incident took place at Bottesford railway crossing at around 12:00 GMT on 25 January. The crossing is situated next to Bottesford station and links two residential areas off Station Road and Sutton Close.

Announcing the inquiry on Friday, the RAIB said its investigation will seek to establish the sequence of events leading up to the tragedy, examine the crossing’s history of previous incidents and assess any underlying risk factors associated with the site.

A spokesperson for the branch said:

"We will publish our findings, including any recommendations to improve safety, at the conclusion of our investigation."

According to the RAIB, which operates as the UK’s independent railway investigation body, the crossing is fitted with gates on either side of the railway and is equipped with signage.
