Overview

Caledonian Sleeper is the UK’s overnight rail service connecting London with Scotland, previously operated by Serco under contract from the Scottish Government. The service specializes in comfortable, long-distance overnight travel, linking London Euston with destinations including Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Inverness, Fort William, and Dundee. Unlike daytime intercity operators, Caledonian Sleeper focuses on overnight journeys, offering a unique mix of accommodation options and onboard services for passengers traveling across Scotland and England.

History

The Caledonian Sleeper service has operated in various forms since the 19th century, but its modern incarnation was established under private operation in 1995. The service has since been modernized and refurbished, with new rolling stock introduced in 2019 to improve comfort, accessibility, and reliability. Caledonian Sleeper has maintained its iconic role in connecting Scottish cities with London, providing an alternative to flying or daytime trains while preserving the heritage of British overnight rail travel.
