Overview

East Midlands Railway (EMR) is a UK train operating company running intercity and regional services across the East Midlands and beyond. Operated by Abellio (now part of Transport UK Group), EMR took over from East Midlands Trains in August 2019. The company provides a key link between London St Pancras, the East Midlands, South Yorkshire, and regional destinations across the area.

Its services combine long-distance intercity trains with regional and local routes, serving both major cities and rural communities.

History

East Midlands Railway began operations on 18 August 2019, after Abellio was awarded the franchise by the Department for Transport. The franchise replaced East Midlands Trains, previously operated by Stagecoach.

Since its launch, EMR has worked to modernise its fleet and stations, improve reliability, and prepare for electrification works on parts of the Midland Main Line. The COVID-19 pandemic brought significant disruption, but EMR has continued to play a central role in the region’s transport network.

Network & Routes

East Midlands Railway operates a wide-ranging network, combining fast intercity trains with local commuter and regional services.

Highlights include:

  • Intercity services between London St Pancras, Leicester, Nottingham, Derby, Sheffield, and beyond

  • Regional services linking towns such as Lincoln, Mansfield, Grantham, and Corby

  • The Liverpool–Norwich route, one of the UK’s longest regional services

  • Connections to airports, including East Midlands Airport via East Midlands Parkway

Fleet & Onboard Facilities

EMR’s current fleet includes:

  • Class 222 Meridian trains for intercity services

  • Class 360 Desiro electric trains for EMR Connect and Luton Airport Express services

  • Diesel multiple units such as Class 170s and Class 158s for regional routes

High-Speed Trains (HSTs) have now been retired. The Class 360 trains are undergoing refurbishment to improve passenger comfort, with updated seating, Wi-Fi, and modern interiors.

All trains provide Standard and First Class seating, power sockets, and Wi-Fi on applicable routes. First Class passengers on intercity services enjoy larger seats, complimentary refreshments, and quieter surroundings.

Travel Information

EMR offers Advance, Off-Peak, and Anytime fares, along with season tickets and railcard discounts. Advance booking is recommended for intercity services, particularly at peak times.

First Class provides extra comfort, complimentary food and drink, and a quieter environment, while regional and commuter services focus on convenience and affordability.

Performance & Reputation

EMR is recognised for modernising services and improving customer experience. While challenges remain with infrastructure and electrification projects, the operator is valued for providing reliable intercity links and essential regional connections.

Future developments include continued fleet upgrades, Class 360 refurbishment, and Midland Main Line electrification to support faster, greener services.
