F1 2020 is a racing simulation game developed by Codemasters Birmingham and published by Codemasters. It was released on July 10, 2020, for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Google Stadia. As the official game of the 2020 FIA Formula One World Championship, it marked the twelfth installment in Codemasters’ F1 series and introduced several new features that expanded both gameplay depth and accessibility. The game was also available in a special Michael Schumacher Deluxe Edition, which included exclusive content celebrating the legendary driver’s career.

One of the most notable additions in F1 2020 was the “My Team” mode, which allowed players to create and manage their own Formula One team as both driver and team principal. This mode introduced elements of team management, including sponsor negotiations, engine supplier selection, and staff development, adding a strategic layer to the racing experience. The game also featured all 22 circuits from the 2020 season, including the returning Zandvoort and Hanoi tracks, as well as the full roster of drivers and teams. Split-screen multiplayer returned for the first time in years, making the game more accessible for casual play.

Promotion for F1 2020 focused heavily on the new My Team mode and the inclusion of Schumacher’s legacy content. Codemasters released trailers showcasing the managerial gameplay, enhanced graphics, and updated car models. The Michael Schumacher Deluxe Edition was promoted with classic cars such as the 1994 Benetton B194 and the 2000 Ferrari F1-2000, appealing to longtime fans of the sport. The marketing campaign also emphasized improvements to handling, AI behavior, and customization options, targeting both hardcore sim racers and newcomers.

Reception to F1 2020 was overwhelmingly positive. Critics praised the My Team mode for its depth and replayability, calling it one of the most innovative features in the series to date. The game’s handling model, visual fidelity, and career structure were also well received, with many noting that it struck a strong balance between realism and accessibility. The return of split-screen multiplayer and expanded customization options were highlighted as welcome additions. Minor criticisms included the absence of some real-world calendar changes due to the pandemic, but overall, the game was considered a high point for the franchise.

F1 2020 maintained a strong player base throughout its lifecycle and was supported with regular updates and esports integration. It was the last F1 title released before Codemasters was acquired by Electronic Arts, marking the end of an era for the studio’s independent stewardship of the series. The game’s success helped solidify Codemasters’ reputation as a leader in motorsport simulation and set a high benchmark for future entries. F1 2020 remains a fan favorite for its blend of innovation, authenticity, and engaging gameplay.
