Volgograd (until 1925 - Tsaritsyn, until 1961 - Stalingrad) is a city in the southeast of the European part of Russia with a population of 1,008,998 people. The administrative center of the Volgograd region. Hero city, the most important point of defense of Tsaritsyn and the Battle of Stalingrad. The city of regional significance, forms the urban district of the hero city of Volgograd as the only settlement in its composition. It arose around 1555 on an island near the left bank of the Volga, but was soon transferred to the cape of the right bank at the confluence of the Tsaritsa River into the Volga, after which it was named Tsaritsyn. There is also a hypothesis that the name Tsaritsyn is derived from the name of the island, which was inscribed on the maps of the XIV-XVI centuries as "Tsitsara". It is believed to be an Iranian name with an unknown meaning. In 1925 the city was renamed Stalingrad in honor of I.V. Stalin. On November 10, 1961, by the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR, the city was named Volgograd.
