Railway Empire is a construction and management simulation game developed by Gaming Minds Studios and published by Kalypso Media. Released on January 26, 2018, for Microsoft Windows, Linux, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, and later for Nintendo Switch on June 19, 2020, the game immerses players in the competitive world of railroad expansion across 19th-century North America. The game challenges players to build intricate rail networks, manage resources, and outmaneuver rivals to establish the most dominant rail empire. The Nintendo Switch version, while offering portability, faced criticism for its visual downgrade and delayed release compared to other platforms.

Set between 1830 and 1930, Railway Empire allows players to construct an elaborate and wide-ranging rail network, purchase over 40 different trains modeled in extraordinary detail, and buy or build railway stations, maintenance buildings, factories, and tourist attractions to keep their travel network ahead of the competition. The game offers five main game modes: Campaign mode, Scenario mode, Free mode, Sandbox mode, and Challenge mode. The Campaign mode takes players through the building of the First Transcontinental Railroad, with missions based around significant historical events, including the American Civil War.

The game's development was inspired by classic railroad simulation games, aiming to provide a modern and detailed experience. Players can explore various strategies, from focusing on passenger transport to prioritizing freight, each affecting the growth and success of their empire. The game also introduces elements like espionage and sabotage, allowing players to deploy spies and bandits to hinder competitors. The inclusion of over 40 historically accurate locomotives and more than 30 different wagons adds depth and authenticity to the gameplay.

The soundtrack of Railway Empire, composed by Dag Winderlich, complements the game's historical setting with a blend of orchestral and period-appropriate music. Released separately as the "Railway Empire - Original Soundtrack" on June 25, 2020, the soundtrack received positive reviews for its immersive and thematic compositions. Critically, the game holds a score of 74 on Metacritic, with praise for its detailed simulation and engaging gameplay, though some critiques pointed to its steep learning curve and occasional technical issues. The game won two awards at the Deutscher Entwicklerpreis 2018, including Best German PC/Console Game and Best German Technical Performance Game, highlighting its strong development and execution.
