Banished is a city-building strategy game developed by Shining Rock Software and released on February 18, 2014, exclusively for Windows. Designed and programmed by Luke Hodorowicz, the game was developed by a single developer and published by Shining Rock Software. It has not been ported to other platforms, maintaining its exclusive presence on Windows. The game immerses players in the role of guiding a group of exiled travelers who aim to establish a thriving settlement in a remote land. With only the clothes on their backs and a cart filled with supplies, players must manage resources, build infrastructure, and ensure the survival and happiness of their citizens.

The gameplay of Banished revolves around careful resource management and survival as an isolated and growing society. Players must assign citizens to various jobs such as building or fishing, and these citizens perform their tasks without specific direction from the player. Citizens have needs that must be met to keep them healthy and happy, such as ensuring enough food is available or that they have a home. The game emphasizes the importance of balancing resources and managing the aging population, as citizens will eventually die. Hazards in the game include harsh weather conditions, fires, depression, starvation, and an aging population. The game's design encourages players to think critically about sustainability and optimization, drawing inspiration from economic theory and the Anno series, which influenced Hodorowicz's decision to exclude combat elements from the game.

Banished features a dynamic music system that enhances the immersive experience. The soundtrack adapts to the player's actions, with each celestial body having its own theme that dynamically changes based on the player's maneuvers or landings. This approach to the soundtrack adds depth to the game's atmosphere, complementing the detailed environments and realistic physics-based simulation. The music's adaptability contributes to the game's overall immersion, making each session feel unique and engaging.

Upon its release, Banished received generally positive reviews from players and critics alike. It was praised for its attention to detail, realistic graphics, and the depth of its simulation. However, some players noted that while the game offered a rich experience, it could be overwhelming for newcomers due to its complexity. Despite this, the game's commitment to authenticity and its extensive content were widely appreciated, solidifying its place as a significant entry in the city-building genre.
