Cabal for the NES was developed by TAD Corporation and released in 1989. The game was published by Milton Bradley in North America and other regions. Originally an arcade game, Cabal was ported to several home platforms including the NES, Commodore 64, and Amiga. The NES version brought the intense arcade action into the home market, retaining much of the original’s fast-paced shooting gameplay while adapting controls for the console format.

Cabal is a third-person shooter where players control a soldier who must destroy enemy forces and their installations across multiple levels. The gameplay involves a combination of side-to-side movement and aiming a crosshair to shoot enemies and obstacles in the environment. This dual control scheme created a unique challenge, requiring players to dodge attacks while strategically targeting enemies. The game drew inspiration from earlier shooting gallery and run-and-gun titles, blending elements of both to create a tense, action-packed experience.

The soundtrack of Cabal features energetic, military-style music that complements the game's intense action. Sound effects emphasize gunfire, explosions, and enemy alerts, helping to immerse players in the battlefield setting. There was no prequel to Cabal, but the game did inspire a sequel titled "Blood Bros." which continued the shoot-and-destroy gameplay with some added elements. The original was promoted as a tough, action-packed shooter that tested reflexes and strategy.

Upon release, Cabal received praise for its innovative gameplay and challenging mechanics, although some criticized the NES version for its limited controls compared to the arcade original. It gained a following among fans of arcade shooters and was appreciated for bringing a fresh style of gameplay to the NES library. Over time, Cabal has been recognized as a cult classic, noted for its unique approach to the shooter genre and its influence on later action games.
