Dragon Fighter is a side-scrolling action game developed by Natsume and published by Towa Chiki in Japan on August 10, 1990. It was later released in North America for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) by SOFEL in January 1992. The game is set in the fantasy world of Baljing, where an evil warlock named Zabbaong attacks the land, prompting the Dragon Spirit to bring a legendary warrior statue to life to defend the people. Dragon Fighter was not ported to other platforms, and there is no prequel or sequel, making it a unique title in Natsume's NES library.

The gameplay of Dragon Fighter blends platforming and shoot-'em-up elements. Players control a magical human fighter who can transform into a flying dragon. The metamorphosis mechanic is central to the game: defeating enemies fills a "metamorphosis gauge," and once it is at least halfway full, the player can transform into a dragon by pressing up while jumping. In dragon form, the player can fly and attack in eight directions, with the type of attack depending on the color of the fighter's outfit, which can be changed by collecting specific power-ups. The game features six stages, each with unique enemies and a boss at the end. Players can switch back to human form at any time, encouraging strategic use of both forms to navigate levels and defeat foes efficiently.

The soundtrack of Dragon Fighter, composed by Kouichi Yamanishi, enhances the game's fantasy setting with energetic and atmospheric music. Each stage has its own distinct track, complementing the unique environment and pace of the level. The music adjusts to the action, transitioning smoothly between the human and dragon forms, maintaining a dynamic rhythm throughout gameplay. Faster tempos accompany combat sequences, while more subdued melodies play during exploration phases, creating an immersive and engaging experience for the player.

Upon its release, Dragon Fighter received praise for its inventive gameplay mechanics and engaging design. Despite limited promotion and relatively obscure cover art, the game has become regarded as a hidden gem among NES titles. It was primarily promoted through print advertisements and word-of-mouth, which contributed to its modest initial exposure. Over time, however, it has gained recognition among retro gaming enthusiasts for its creative mechanics and unique blend of genres, solidifying its status as a cult classic in the NES library.
