Dungeon Master was developed by FTL Games and first released in 1987 for the Atari ST, later making its way to other platforms such as the Amiga, PC, Apple IIgs, SNES, and Sega CD. Published by FTL Games themselves, the title quickly became a landmark in the role-playing game genre due to its pioneering use of real-time gameplay and immersive first-person perspective. It wasn’t just a hit on the Atari ST—it was a system seller, influencing the design of countless dungeon-crawling RPGs that followed.

The game casts the player as a spirit guiding four champions through a massive underground dungeon in search of the Firestaff, a powerful artifact needed to defeat the evil Lord Chaos. Dungeon Master stood out for its real-time combat, requiring players to time attacks, cast spells using runes, and manage resources like food, water, and stamina. The environmental puzzles and traps added an extra layer of strategy, making it more than just a hack-and-slash adventure.

While the game didn’t have a traditional soundtrack, it used atmospheric sound effects to heighten immersion—dripping water, the footsteps of approaching enemies, and the clatter of weapons created a tense, moody environment. This minimalistic sound design was intentional, focusing on creating suspense rather than relying on background music. Dungeon Master later spawned a direct sequel, Chaos Strikes Back (1989), which retained the original’s mechanics but introduced even more challenging dungeon layouts.

Promotion for the game was largely driven by word-of-mouth and glowing magazine reviews, which hailed it as a breakthrough in RPG design. It became one of the best-selling titles for the Atari ST and maintained long-lasting popularity on the Amiga. Critics praised its depth, innovation, and addictive gameplay, securing its place as one of the most influential computer games of the late 1980s.
