Football Manager 26 is developed by Sports Interactive and published by Sega, continuing the long-standing partnership that has defined the series for decades. The game was officially announced in August 2025, following the unexpected cancellation of Football Manager 25, and is set to launch in the fall of 2025. This entry represents not just a continuation of the franchise but also a pivotal moment, as it marks the series’ long-awaited move to the Unity engine.

In terms of availability, Football Manager 26 has been confirmed for PC, specifically Windows at launch. Previous entries in the series have also reached a variety of platforms, including Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and mobile devices, sometimes in tailored or simplified editions. While no additional platforms have yet been officially confirmed for this release, it is widely expected that console and mobile versions will follow, continuing the series’ tradition of accessibility across multiple devices.

Gameplay for Football Manager 26 is heavily shaped by its transition to Unity, with a redesigned match engine and improved visual presentation. The developers have emphasized smoother player animations, more lifelike movement, and richer match-day detail to create a more immersive experience. A new “Match Day First Look” feature was highlighted in its reveal trailer, suggesting a stronger narrative focus on the atmosphere of game day alongside the already in-depth management systems. Official league licensing, most notably the Premier League, further anchors the game’s authenticity.

This release builds on the long heritage of the Football Manager series, which has been an annual staple since the mid-2000s. Football Manager 24 proved to be the most successful entry yet, drawing millions of players worldwide. Its planned successor, Football Manager 25, was originally intended to be the first Unity-based edition and to introduce long-requested features such as women’s football and a fully refreshed interface. However, repeated delays and quality issues ultimately led to its cancellation, a rare move for such a consistent franchise.

The cancellation of Football Manager 25 was a difficult moment for both the studio and the community. Sports Interactive’s director Miles Jacobson explained that internal testing scores were simply not high enough, and the game was not meeting the quality standards expected of the brand. Though the decision drew initial shock, many players respected the transparency, noting that releasing a subpar product could have done lasting harm to the series’ reputation. The candid communication helped preserve goodwill, paving the way for Football Manager 26 to become a symbolic fresh start.

Promotion for Football Manager 26 has focused on rebuilding excitement and trust. The first teaser showcased the new engine and match-day visuals, signaling the improvements players had been waiting for since the cancellation of its predecessor. Marketing messages have leaned into themes of renewal and authenticity, emphasizing both technical upgrades and official licensing partnerships. Early reaction from fans has been strongly positive, with many welcoming the delay as a sign of commitment to quality. This has positioned Football Manager 26 as one of the most anticipated releases in the series’ history.
