Port Royale 4 was developed by Gaming Minds Studios and published by Kalypso Media. It was released on September 25, 2020, originally for PC, and later versions appeared for consoles and the Nintendo Switch. As the fourth entry in the Port Royale franchise, it builds on the economic and trading foundations of its predecessors while introducing new mechanics.

The game is set in the Caribbean during the 17th century, where colonial powers such as Spain, England, France, and the Netherlands vie for dominance. Players act as a budding governor, managing trade networks among multiple islands, building production chains, constructing and upgrading towns, and navigating the interplay of supply and demand. One of the newer features compared to earlier entries is turn-based naval combat, allowing tactical engagements between fleets. The game also allows players to issue letters of marque, engage in piracy, or focus on purely economic expansion.

In promoting Port Royale 4, the developer and publisher emphasized the depth of its systems, the freedom to pursue trade or conflict, and the visual polish of its Caribbean setting. Major updates and patches were rolled out post-launch, with community feedback incorporated. The port to consoles and Switch also helped broaden its reach, and marketing leaned into the legacy of the series and the appeal of historical trade simulation.

Reception for Port Royale 4 has been mixed. On Steam, the game holds a “Mixed” review rating, with many players praising the ambition, economic complexity, and customization possibilities. Critics and users, however, often point to the combat system as underwhelming or slow, note UI and usability challenges, and mention that some mechanics feel overly opaque. Still, for fans of deep strategy and trade simulations, Port Royale 4 is often seen as a solid, if imperfect, addition to the genre.
