Rick Dangerous 2 was developed by Core Design and released in 1990 as the sequel to the popular platformer Rick Dangerous, which had debuted two years earlier. Published by MicroProse, the game continued the adventures of the intrepid and often unlucky explorer Rick, this time sending him on a mission to thwart an alien invasion. The sequel built upon the original’s mix of puzzle-solving, trap-dodging, and precise platforming, but introduced a fresh sci-fi theme and expanded gameplay mechanics that distinguished it from its predecessor.

The game was initially released for the Amiga and Atari ST, with ports following for other systems such as the Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum, and Amstrad CPC. This broad range of platforms helped Rick Dangerous 2 reach a wider audience across Europe, where the franchise enjoyed particular popularity. The game’s soundtrack, composed by Allister Brimble for the Amiga version, was noted for its catchy, upbeat tunes that combined catchy melodies with the era’s signature synthesized sound, adding to the game’s atmosphere and enhancing the tension during tricky sections.

Rick Dangerous 2 picked up the story shortly after the original, where Rick had survived numerous deadly traps and enemy encounters in an Indiana Jones-style adventure. This time, the narrative took a turn toward science fiction, with Rick battling extraterrestrial threats on a strange planet. The promotion for the sequel focused heavily on the game’s increased challenge and new alien-themed environments, aiming to entice fans of the original with the promise of bigger, more diverse levels and more inventive hazards. Advertisements and magazine previews highlighted the game’s improved graphics, sound, and gameplay variety, although the marketing remained largely regional and targeted toward European markets.

Upon release, Rick Dangerous 2 received mixed to positive reviews. Critics praised its humor, level design, and the challenge it presented to seasoned platform gamers, while some noted that it retained much of the trial-and-error difficulty that characterized the first game, which could be frustrating for casual players. Despite not achieving the same iconic status as some other platformers of the era, Rick Dangerous 2 carved out a loyal following and remains a nostalgic favorite among fans of early 1990s European computer games, appreciated for its blend of action, puzzle elements, and quirky style.
