Train Sim World 6: S-Bahn Köln BR 423

The New Journeys – S-Bahn Köln BR 423 add-on was developed and published by Dovetail Games as part of their “New Journeys” series. It was first released in 2022 for Train Sim World 2 and has since been carried forward into newer versions of the simulator, including Train Sim World 6. The DLC is designed to expand the Schnellfahrstrecke Köln–Aachen route by introducing authentic S-Bahn commuter operations. The BR 423 electric multiple unit, a staple of the Köln region’s suburban network, brings new service patterns and gameplay variety to one of Germany’s most popular high-speed routes in the game.

In terms of content, the add-on provides the DB BR 423 in the red S-Bahn Köln livery, complete with accurate cab features and true-to-life performance characteristics. It adds new layers to the Köln–Aachen timetable, allowing players to operate the busy S19 and S12 services that weave between regional and intercity traffic. The DLC also includes three career scenarios and is compatible with the Livery Designer, Scenario Planner, and Creators Club features. Originally designed for earlier Train Sim World versions, the DLC was later marked as “TSW Compatible,” meaning it can be used across multiple editions while retaining its original design and performance features.

Promotion for the S-Bahn Köln BR 423 DLC followed Dovetail’s usual strategy for its New Journeys content. It was featured alongside other expansions in the New Journeys collection, including the Silver 1972 Stock and the CSX SD40, creating a cross-regional bundle for players interested in British, German, and American routes. The promotional push highlighted the expanded timetables, added realism, and refreshed experiences these smaller add-ons could bring to existing routes. Marketing focused on social media previews, community posts, and short promotional trailers that emphasized the busy, authentic commuter feel of the Köln–Aachen corridor when enhanced by the BR 423.

Reception of the DLC has been generally positive, especially among fans of German commuter rail. Players appreciated the added realism that the BR 423 brought to the route, as it allowed the Köln–Aachen line to feel more populated and dynamic. Some criticism arose regarding technical inconsistencies across different Train Sim World versions, particularly around timetable layers and compatibility. However, the add-on’s authenticity, detailed modelling, and the liveliness it adds to an already well-liked route have made it a valued addition to the game. The BR 423 continues to be seen as a strong example of how Dovetail’s smaller content packs can meaningfully expand the scope of existing Train Sim World experiences.
