UBOAT was developed by the Polish studio Deep Water Studio and published by PlayWay, first released in early access for Windows PC in April 2019. It is a submarine simulation game set during World War II, focusing on the German U-boat crews of the Kriegsmarine. The game has remained PC-exclusive since its debut, with no ports to consoles or other platforms announced. There is no direct prequel to UBOAT, though it draws on the legacy of earlier submarine simulations such as the Silent Hunter series, which helped establish the framework for realistic undersea warfare in gaming.

The game puts players in command of a Type VII U-boat, one of the most iconic submarines used by Germany during the war. Unlike many naval games that focus solely on combat, UBOAT integrates crew management, survival mechanics, and detailed simulation of submarine operations. Players must monitor the morale, health, and stamina of their crew, maintain the vessel’s mechanical systems, manage supplies, and engage in both patrol and combat missions. The open-world design allows for non-linear gameplay, giving players the freedom to decide how to carry out missions and respond to dynamic events at sea.

UBOAT’s inspiration is rooted in the tense, resource-driven nature of life aboard a WWII submarine, aiming to provide not only accurate naval combat but also the human side of command. The game’s mechanics blend simulation and strategy, with elements reminiscent of both survival and role-playing games. The soundtrack supports this immersive approach with a mix of tense orchestral themes during combat encounters and subtle, atmospheric tracks during patrols, complementing the constant ambient hum of the submarine’s engines, creaks of the hull, and ocean sounds to enhance realism.

Promoted primarily through crowdfunding campaigns, community forums, and gameplay previews, UBOAT gained attention among both simulation fans and WWII history enthusiasts. Reception has been generally positive, with players praising its depth, atmosphere, and blend of management with action, though some noted that the early access version still needed optimization and additional content. Regular updates have expanded features, improved AI, and refined performance, and while there has been no direct sequel, Deep Water Studio has committed to ongoing development, keeping the game active and evolving within its niche.
