£4.5m Upgrade Works Underway on the Scenic Kyle Line
The Kyle line in the west Highlands has closed temporarily to allow for £4.5m of essential upgrades aimed at improving the long-term reliability and safety of the route. Stretching more than 50 miles (80km) from Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh, the line will see around 4.5 miles (7km) of track replaced between Achnashellach and Strathcarron, including new rails, sleepers, and ballast.
To ensure the work can be completed safely, the line will remain closed between Dingwall and Kyle of Lochalsh until Monday 10 November. The project also includes bridge inspections and drainage improvements designed to reduce flooding and weather-related disruption. An amended train service is operating between Inverness and Dingwall, with buses replacing trains between Inverness and Stromeferry, and a shuttle bus linking Stromeferry and Kyle of Lochalsh.
ScotRail Service Delivery Director Mark Ilderton said: "We're grateful to customers for their patience and understanding when these vital improvements take place." Ross Moran, route director at Network Rail Scotland, added: “The Kyle line is a much-loved part of Scotland’s rail heritage, and few routes offer such scenic views of our landscape. This investment will help safeguard its future, ensuring it remains a reliable, sustainable travel option for both local communities and visitors for many more generations to come. We recognise that any closure of the railway causes disruption and want to thank passengers and lineside neighbours for their patience and support. This short-term inconvenience will bring long-term benefits as we look forward to smoother journeys and a more dependable rail service.”
The upgrades form part of ongoing investment in Scotland’s rural rail network, aimed at enhancing performance and resilience in challenging terrain. Once complete, the work is expected to improve journey times, reduce maintenance needs, and preserve one of the country’s most scenic and historically significant routes.
