Alstom has secured a long-term role in maintaining regional trains in western Sweden after the operator SJ was awarded a new contract to run Västtågen services.

The agreement, awarded by Västtrafik, the authority responsible for public transport across Western Sweden, confirms SJ as the operator of the Västtågen fleet. As part of the arrangement, Alstom will continue to act as SJ’s maintenance partner for the trains under a contract valued at just under €200 million.

The maintenance agreement will run for 11 years and is scheduled to begin in December 2027. Under the new contract, Alstom’s responsibilities will expand to include heavier maintenance of vehicles and key components, alongside the continued development and rollout of the company’s digital maintenance systems.

Preparation work for the contract will begin immediately, with an estimated 20-month planning phase before the new agreement formally takes effect. The long-term deal will also support further development of Alstom’s Maintenance Performance Centre in Gothenburg, which provides specialist support for the company’s maintenance activities across the region.

SJ’s subsidiary, SJ Götalandståg, has operated the Västtågen services since 2012, while Alstom has been responsible for maintaining the fleet for more than a decade. The continued partnership will also support the introduction of new trains that Alstom is scheduled to deliver during the lifetime of the contract.

Helena Isaksson, CEO of SJ Götalandståg said:

“This is a confirmation of the commitment and quality that characterise our work. Together with Alstom, we have built a strong and long-term partnership that creates stable conditions for continuing to develop Västtågen and deliver reliable services for passengers.”

Mikael Granberg, Rolling Stock Maintenance for Nordics at Alstom said:

“We are very pleased to have been entrusted once again with responsibility for the maintenance and rolling stock development of Västtågen, the result of our strong collaboration with SJ. I would also like to extend a sincere thank you to our technicians and all other employees working with this today. It is thanks to their commitment and consistently high quality of delivery that we have strengthened our position in the region.”
