Bhopal Joins India’s Metro Network With Launch of Alstom-Built Trains
Bhopal has entered the era of metro rail services with the launch of its first operational route, marked by the inaugural run of new metro trains supplied by Alstom. The opening service departed from Subhash Nagar metro station in the presence of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav and Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Shri Manohar Lal Khattar, formally introducing metro travel to the city.
The new Movia metro trains have been designed and manufactured entirely in India as part of the ‘Make in India’ initiative. Built at Alstom’s rolling stock facility in Savli, Gujarat, the trainsets form part of a combined order for the Bhopal and Indore metro systems placed by Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited.
Alstom secured the 387-million-euro contract in June 2022, covering the design, manufacture, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of 52 metro trainsets, along with long-term maintenance support. The deal includes 27 trains for Bhopal and 25 for Indore, as well as the installation of a Communications-Based Train Control signalling system and associated train control and telecommunications systems. This represents Alstom’s second combined metro order in India, following earlier projects in Agra and Kanpur.
The first trainset for Bhopal was delivered in August 2023, just over fourteen months after the notice to proceed, with a second following within weeks. The lightweight, modern trains are capable of speeds of up to 80 km/h and will operate across a planned 31.5 km network with 30 stations. The initial priority section opened to service covers nearly 7 km and includes eight stations. Each train can carry 144 seated passengers and up to 981 standing, with nine trainsets delivered so far to Bhopal and nineteen to Indore.
Designed with sustainability and accessibility in mind, the trains feature energy-efficient traction systems with regenerative braking, smart lighting, and advanced air-conditioning. Safety and security measures include continuous CCTV monitoring, emergency communication systems, and intelligent surveillance functions. Dedicated wheelchair spaces are provided to ensure inclusive access for passengers with reduced mobility.
The Bhopal Movia trains are part of Alstom’s wider Metropolis metro portfolio, which has been deployed in cities around the world for more than six decades. Alstom-built metro systems are currently in operation in major global centres such as London, Delhi, Stockholm and Singapore, alongside extensive deployments across India and internationally.
