Dino and Halloween Trains Set to Delight Essex Families This Half Term

Families across Essex can look forward to two themed train adventures this October half term, promising affordable fun and memorable days out. The Essex and South Suffolk Community Rail Partnership (CRP), working with Greater Anglia, will host a dinosaur-themed train on 28 October and a spooky ‘Halloween Train’ on 31 October, both designed to entertain children while encouraging rail travel.

The dinosaur-themed train coincides with Braintree Museum’s Big Dino Day, returning after the success of its Extinction exhibition earlier this year. Families can board the special service from Witham to Braintree at 10:34 on 28 October, where children will receive goodie bags before meeting a friendly dinosaur who will guide them on a short walk to the museum. Passengers showing their train ticket will enjoy half-price admission or 10% off an annual family pass, while return travel is flexible for the rest of the day.

On 31 October, the Halloween Train will run from Manningtree to Harwich Town, departing at 4:00pm and returning at 4:48pm. A specially decorated carriage will set the scene for a festive journey, with Halloween goodie bags and a costume competition offering prizes for the most creative homemade outfits – with extra points for recycled materials. “Train journeys are a fantastic way for families to spend time together - they’re relaxing, fun, and children absolutely love them,” said Jane Stewart, Essex and South Suffolk CRP officer. “These special half term events are all about making rail travel a joyful and memorable experience. It's a great-value option for keeping the kids entertained during the school holidays.”

Alan Neville, Customer and Community Engagement Manager for Greater Anglia, said: “We’re proud to work with the Essex and South Suffolk CRP to support these brilliant community events. It’s a great way to encourage people to discover the joys of rail travel and explore all that Essex has to offer in a sustainable and enjoyable way.” The Essex and South Suffolk CRP continues to promote the county’s six branch lines, supporting projects that boost local engagement, economic growth, and sustainable travel for all.
