Driver shortages cause fresh Sunday cancellations across key rail routes
Today’s railway network is facing fresh disruption as three major UK operators grapple with limited driver and crew availability, compounding travel difficulties for passengers on one of the busiest Sundays of the winter period. Services on London Overground routes to and from Liverpool Street have been cut back, with fewer trains able to run than scheduled because of a shortage of available drivers. The disruption has led to cancellations and amended timetables, with passengers advised to check journey planners before travelling.
Across the national network, CrossCountry services are also being affected by a shortage of train crew. Routes linking major cities, including services between Manchester Piccadilly, Birmingham New Street and the south coast, are operating to a reduced timetable. Cancellations and alterations are being felt throughout the day, with knock-on effects for long-distance journeys and connections at key interchange stations.
On the Isle of Wight, the Island Line is experiencing disruption due to insufficient crew availability between Ryde Pier Head and Shanklin. Several services have been cancelled during the day, prompting advice for passengers to consider alternative travel arrangements where possible. The latest issues add to a series of recent operational challenges on the line.
Industry observers say the problems seen today reflect wider staffing pressures across the rail network, particularly on Sundays when many drivers and on-train staff are not contractually required to work. As passenger demand remains strong, especially at weekends, the reliance on voluntary overtime continues to leave services vulnerable to disruption when crew numbers fall short.
