East Midlands Railway Issues Summer Warning as Skegness Trains Expected to Sell Out

East Midlands Railway is warning passengers heading to Skegness this summer to reserve seats in advance as the operator prepares for another surge in demand on its popular seaside services.

The train operator, run by Transport UK, says extra capacity is being added to the Nottingham to Skegness route following heavy demand in previous years. Even with longer trains being introduced across much of the timetable, passengers without reservations could still find themselves unable to board their preferred service during peak periods.

Under the summer schedule, four out of every five services on the route will run using four-car trains, while the remaining services will operate with three-car formations on selected busy days. EMR says the biggest pressure is expected on Fridays, Saturdays and Mondays throughout the holiday season.

To manage demand, reservations will become compulsory on the busiest days, meaning passengers must secure a booking before travelling. The operator says the move is aimed at preventing overcrowding and improving journeys for those travelling to the Lincolnshire coast.

Passengers are also being advised to keep luggage to a minimum due to limited storage space onboard. Smaller bags measuring up to 55cm by 40cm by 20cm can be placed in overhead racks, while holdalls should be stored between seats. Larger suitcases will need to be placed in designated luggage areas, with staff available at Nottingham and Skegness stations on key dates to assist customers.

Philippa Cresswell, Customer Experience Director at East Midlands Railway, said:

"We know how popular Skegness is during the summer months, and we’re pleased to be able to offer more seats for customers this year. However, trains are still expected to be very busy - especially at weekends- so it’s essential that customers plan ahead and book in advance to guarantee their journey. By reserving a space and choosing quieter services where possible, customers can enjoy a smoother and more comfortable trip to the seaside. Likewise, we strongly advise to only bring what you need and pack light."

The warnings come as Skegness once again prepares for the annual influx of summer visitors, with rail operators continuing to face the challenge of balancing strong seasonal demand against limited train capacity on some regional routes.
