East Midlands Railway has officially opened a new Assisted Travel Lounge at Sheffield Station, aimed at improving the experience for passengers who require additional help when travelling.

The operator, which is run by Transport UK, said the new facility provides a calm, welcoming and fully accessible space within the station concourse. It offers a clearly designated waiting area specifically for customers who have booked assistance or need extra support during their journey.

Designed with accessibility at its core, the lounge features seating with integrated charging points, ample space for wheelchair users and carefully positioned planters and artificial greenery intended to create a reassuring and relaxed atmosphere. Artwork inspired by the Sheffield Winter Gardens has also been incorporated into the space, alongside practical features such as a help point totem and a water bowl for assistance dogs.

East Midlands Railway said the lounge was developed following engagement with its Accessibility & Inclusion Panel, ensuring feedback from disabled customers and those who rely on assisted travel shaped the final design. The Sheffield opening builds on the introduction of a similar facility at Derby Station, which opened in December.

Philippa Cresswell, Customer Experience Director at East Midlands Railway, said:

"The opening of the Assisted Travel Lounge at Sheffield, follows in the footsteps of Derby station's lounge, and is another important step in making our railway more inclusive. We want every customer to feel confident, comfortable and supported when travelling with us, and this new space provides a dedicated environment where customers can wait, recharge and receive assistance in comfort."
