Grand National Crowds Put Liverpool Rail Network to the Test as Northern Praises Passengers

Rail operator Northern has commended passengers for their cooperation during one of the busiest periods in the Liverpool travel calendar, as thousands descended on Merseyside for the Grand National.

More than 150,000 people attended the three-day racing festival at Aintree Racecourse, placing significant pressure on local transport networks. Many visitors passed through Liverpool Lime Street station to connect with onward services to Aintree.

The busiest day coincided with a major football fixture at Anfield, where supporters gathered to watch Liverpool FC take on Fulham FC. The overlap of events created a surge in passenger numbers across the city’s rail network.

Despite the spike in demand, disruption was kept to a minimum. Northern reported that nearly 98% of its scheduled services in the Liverpool area operated as planned across the three days, following extensive preparation in the lead-up to the event.

The operator worked alongside Network Rail to manage the increased footfall, deploying additional staff at key stations and strengthening capacity on some routes with extra carriages.

Additional services were also introduced, including extra trains running between Ormskirk and Preston on the Saturday to accommodate peak demand. Contingency measures, such as a rapid response team and standby rail replacement buses, were also put in place but were ultimately not needed.

Craig Harrop, Northern’s Director of Service Delivery in Liverpool, said:

“We welcomed thousands of racing fans on board last week, following weeks of planning and preparation. Our services and stations were busy, however passengers were patient and polite throughout the three-day event, which makes it much easier for us to keep everything running smoothly. I’d like to thank all of the staff from across the industry who worked so hard to get everyone where they needed to go, right across the city region, without any significant delays or cancellations."
