New research from Great Western Railway (GWR) shows that early autumn is now Britain’s favourite season for leisure breaks, overtaking peak summer as the preferred time for travel. Some 39% of respondents chose September and October for their trips, compared to just 14% who favour the traditional summer months.

The study highlights a growing trend among 'empty-nesters'—parents whose children have left home—who are leading a quieter travel revolution. This group is particularly drawn to autumn for its lower costs, reduced crowds, and less stressful travel, with 63% likely to book an autumn break compared to 51% of the general population. Their main aim? To unwind and relax, with 34% prioritising personal restoration after years of family-focused planning.

Economics and experience are driving this shift. Half of all respondents cited “lower prices and better value” as a key motivator for autumn travel, while 46% are attracted by quieter destinations and fewer crowds. With warm autumn weather extending the practical travel season, many are finding outdoor activities and sightseeing appealing well into October.

The research also shows distinct patterns among parents of university-aged children. For 41% of this group, visiting children at university is a primary autumn motivation, with 45% hoping to make trips every three months and 36% planning monthly visits. This trend reflects the season’s growing role in practical family travel as well as leisure.

Spontaneous day trips are also on the rise, with 59% of respondents having taken a last-minute train trip in autumn and willing to do so again. A further 22% expressed interest in trying such excursions for the first time, taking advantage of easier booking, flexible travel options, and reduced need for advance planning.

Jeremy Clarke, GWR Head of Customer Research, said: “As the crowds ebb away in the lull between summer and Christmas, many people have found a new affection for autumn travel. The beautiful autumn colours, the opportunity to be spontaneous with great value rail tickets, and quieter destinations make this the perfect time to get out there.”
