“Lives at Risk” Warning After Repeated Dangerous Behaviour at Featherstone Crossing
Network Rail has issued an urgent safety warning after a series of dangerous incidents at a level crossing in West Yorkshire raised fears of a potential tragedy.
The warning follows four separate cases of misuse at the Sportsfield footpath level crossing within just two weeks. Reports indicate that young people have been deliberately putting themselves in harm’s way by playing “chicken” with approaching trains.
In a separate incident that has heightened concerns, a two-year-old child was able to wander onto the railway at the crossing while under the supervision of grandparents, placing them in immediate danger.
Officials say the pattern of behaviour represents a growing safety risk and are urging the public to take extra care when using level crossings.
• Always read instruction signs and check both directions for trains.
• Be alert – avoid distractions like using mobile phones or wearing headphones.
• Cross quickly and carefully – never stop on a crossing.
• Never assume it is safe because a train has just passed. Another could follow soon afterwards.
Further action is now being planned, including new risk assessments at both Sportsfield and the nearby Halfpenny Lane level crossing, which has also been identified as a location prone to misuse.
Network Rail has also said it will increase engagement with local communities and schools in an effort to reinforce rail safety awareness among young people, while longer-term measures for both crossings are reviewed.
Darren Robertson-Wilson, Network Rail level crossing manager, said:
“My feeling is that we will have a serious injury or worse here very soon if these unsafe behaviours continue. Both Sportsfield and Halfpenny Lane level crossings can be used safely – but misuse, trespass or taking risks can have devastating consequences. We’re extremely concerned by the behaviour seen recently and urge everyone to follow the level crossing safety guidelines and to speak to children and young people about the dangers. One poor decision can change lives forever.”
The warning comes as officials stress that even a momentary lapse in judgement at level crossings can have fatal consequences.
