Metro Lost Property To Be Sold At Tynemouth Station For North East Dementia Care

Lost property collected from Metro trains, stations and bus interchanges over the past two years will be sold this weekend to raise money for a North East charity.

The sale will be held at Tynemouth Market, inside Tynemouth Metro station, on Sunday 7 June between 9am and 3pm.

Hundreds of unclaimed items will be available, ranging from tents, windbreaker screens and Christmas trees to cuddly toys, umbrellas, walking sticks and sunglasses.

Other items going on sale include jewellery, brand-new clothing still carrying tags, and a range of sports equipment such as basketballs, badminton racquets, boxing gloves and cycling helmets.

All money raised will go to Nexus’ chosen charity of the year, North East Dementia Care. The Sunderland-based charity provides dementia-specific care in a safe and welcoming setting.

The charity is currently trying to raise £35,000 for a new minibus, with transport identified as its main funding priority. Nexus said proceeds from the lost property sale, along with fundraising during 2026, will support that target.

Items at the Tynemouth Market sale will be cash only. Anything left unsold will either be recycled or donated to charity.

Nexus holds lost property for 28 days before items are discarded, recycled or sold, depending on what they are and their condition.

Anyone who has lost an item on a Metro train, at a Metro station or at a bus interchange is being encouraged to contact Nexus Customer Relations as soon as possible by calling 0191 20 20 747 or emailing [email protected].

Each year, Nexus employees nominate and vote for a charity to support through fundraising. Previous activities have included charity walks, bike rides, raffles, cake sales, coffee mornings and a skydive.

Last year, almost £7,000 was raised for James’ Place, which supports men’s mental health. Other charities supported in previous years include Feeding Families, the Alzheimer’s Society, Great North Air Ambulance and Daft as a Brush cancer patient care.

Lynne Robinson, Public Affairs Manager at Nexus, said:

“We’ve had a lot of money raised in previous years with our lost property auctions and sales. We have a weird and wonderful mix of items to sell, and we usually get lots of interest. It’s great to think that the unclaimed lost property can be put to such good use, and the funds raised will be welcomed by North East Dementia Care.”
