Tram services on part of Manchester’s Metrolink network have been suspended after a car became stranded on the tracks near the city centre.

Services on the Ashton Line are currently unable to run between Piccadilly and Ashton-under-Lyne after a BMW was driven onto the tramway close to New Islington stop on the morning of January 18. Trams have been halted on the route until further notice while the incident is dealt with.

The incident was witnessed by local councillor Alan Good, who was waiting for a tram at New Islington at the time. He said the vehicle drove directly onto the tracks before becoming stuck and unable to move.

Alan said:

"I was at my local tram stop in New Islington and a BMW just drove down the tram tracks. It obviously stopped because of the drop, might have busted a tyre. No way it's getting out without getting towed."

Transport for Greater Manchester confirmed the suspension of services on the Ashton Line and advised passengers to use alternative transport while the car remains on the tracks.

A statement published on TfGM’s website said:

"Due to a car on the track at New Islington we are currently unable to operate services on the Ashton Line. Customers can use tickets on Bee Network Bus Services. No services operating between Ashton and Piccadilly Station. Customers can use tickets on the 7, 53, 76, 76A, 171, 172, 216, 219, 220, 221, 230, 231 bus services. We apologise for any inconvenience caused."

Passengers have been advised to check for updates before travelling, with disruption expected to continue until the vehicle is removed and the line is deemed safe for trams to resume running.
