Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) has appointed Paul Groves as its new Train Services Director for Thameslink and Great Northern, bringing extensive industry experience to the UK’s largest train operator. Paul joined GTR in October and has quickly familiarised himself with the business and its operations.

Paul began his rail career as a driver for Heathrow Express before moving into the control room and progressing through various management roles. Most recently, he served at GTR’s sister company, GTS Rail, as Director of Driver Operations and Safety for the Elizabeth Line. During his time on the Elizabeth Line, Paul oversaw the training and introduction of a new fleet, the implementation of European Train Control System (ETCS) and Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling, and led one of the largest driver recruitment campaigns in the UK. His work helped the line achieve multiple awards, including Operator of the Year at the 2023 and 2024 National Transport Awards.

GTR’s Chief Operating Officer, John Whitehurst, said: “Paul’s longstanding railway career is a fantastic addition to my team and the wider business. I’m confident Paul’s extensive knowledge of running operations on the Elizabeth Line will play an important part in GTR’s future success, bringing dynamic thinking and a fresh perspective to help us improve our services for our customers. Brian Husbands, the former Train Services Director for Thameslink and Great Northern, has moved to a new role as Train Services Director for Southern and Gatwick Express, continuing GTR’s senior management reshuffle.

Paul’s appointment is part of GTR’s ongoing strategy to strengthen leadership across its services and ensure continued improvements in operational performance and customer experience across its network.
