Pedestrian killed after being struck by freight train in south Charlotte

A fatal incident involving a pedestrian and a freight train was reported in Charlotte on Friday evening, according to emergency officials.

MEDIC said the person was struck in the 5700 block of Old Pineville Road and was pronounced dead at the scene. The agency confirmed the death in a post on social media platform X.

Reports indicate the collision involved a Norfolk Southern freight train. Queen City News said no one aboard the train was injured.

WSOC, a news partner of the Charlotte Observer, reported that the person was hit shortly before 7:45 p.m.

As of Saturday, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police had not released further information about the circumstances of the collision. Authorities also had not identified the victim or explained why the individual was on the tracks at the time.
