Person killed after being hit by train at Ewell East station
A fatal incident on the railway near Sutton led to the closure of part of the Southern network late on Sunday night. Emergency services were dispatched to Ewell East station after reports that a person had been struck by a train, with the alert raised shortly after 11.30pm on January 18.
Despite the attendance of paramedics, the individual was pronounced dead at the scene. British Transport Police confirmed that the circumstances are not believed to be suspicious and that the death will be referred to the coroner in due course.
The incident had an immediate impact on rail services in the area. Southern confirmed that trains were unable to run between Sutton and Epsom while emergency crews responded, causing disruption to late-night journeys.
A British Transport Police spokesperson said:
“Officers were called to Ewell East railway station at 11.32pm on January 18 to reports of a casualty on the tracks. Paramedics also attended, and sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene. This incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”
