RMT welcomes government plans to establish Great British Railways
The Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) has welcomed upcoming government legislation that will formally establish Great British Railways (GBR).
General Secretary Eddie Dempsey said the move would create “a new integrated publicly owned organisation, uniting track and train.” He described the creation of GBR as the culmination of more than 30 years of campaigning against privatisation and fragmentation of Britain’s railways.
“GBR could be a once in a generation opportunity to drive improvements for passengers, workers, sustainable economic growth and improved productivity in our economy,” Dempsey added.
The union confirmed it is awaiting further details of the Bill and will seek discussions at the highest levels of government to ensure that the working conditions of the entire railway workforce are protected and enhanced under the new structure.
