A nine-year-old train enthusiast from County Durham has been given a rare behind-the-scenes insight into how the railway operates, after TransPennine Express welcomed him to its Newcastle depot for a special visit.

Mylo, who lives in Durham, attended the depot with his mother, Kellie Muir, where he was offered an exclusive look at day-to-day railway operations and the chance to meet members of the TransPennine Express team responsible for running services.

The visit was arranged after the operator became aware of Mylo’s strong interest in trains. He is autistic and regularly shares his enthusiasm online, where he has built a large following on TikTok through train-related content.

On the day, the experience was hosted by JJ Fletcher, TransPennine Express’ Area Customer Experience Manager. Mylo was taken on a guided tour of the depot and introduced to staff who play key roles in preparing trains for service.

He was later joined by TPE’s Conductor of the Year, Matty Walton, along with trainee conductor Nathan Whale. Together, they showed him how crews ready trains before departure and carry out checks ahead of entering service.

The visit concluded with time onboard a Class 802 Nova 1 train, with Mylo travelling on the 13:02 service departing from Newcastle.

JJ Fletcher, Area Customer Experience Manager for TPE, said:

"It was an absolute pleasure to show TikTok star Mylo around Newcastle depot with his mum and give him a behind-the-scenes tour of life on the railway. Seeing his excitement and passion for trains made it a very special visit for everyone involved.”

Mylo added:

“I had the best day seeing the depot and going on a TPE train.”
