Stadler Wins Major Order for 35 EURO4001 Freight Locomotives in Turkey
Stadler has secured a contract with Turkish state rail operator TCDD Taşımacılık for the supply of 35 Co’Co’ EURO4001 diesel-electric locomotives, reinforcing the manufacturer’s presence in the growing Turkish rail freight market. Designed specifically for demanding freight operations, the EURO4001 has been developed to handle heavy loads on non-electrified routes and steep gradients, positioning it among the most powerful locomotives of its type in Europe.
The deal builds on the wider success of Stadler’s EURO locomotive family, which has now surpassed 400 units sold across 12 European countries, as well as Uruguay and Turkey. Variants from the same family, including the EURODUAL, have already been operating in Turkey for the past four years, where they have demonstrated strong reliability and high levels of energy efficiency in service.
Manufacture and design of the new locomotives will take place at Stadler’s Valencia competence centre. Delivery and entry into service will be supported by Stadler Service Türkiye, working in close cooperation with local partners AYKAL Group A.Ş. and CERTIFER Türkiye. The collaboration is intended to ensure local integration, compliance and a smooth introduction of the fleet into operational use.
From an environmental and technical standpoint, the EURO4001 meets Euro Stage V emissions standards, delivering significant reductions in pollutants. Compared with the existing locomotive fleet, particulate matter emissions are cut by more than 90%, while nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons are reduced by over 50%. The locomotives are also compliant with European TSI interoperability requirements and are equipped with both the ETCS Level 2 train control system and Turkey’s national ATS system.
The order comes as Turkey positions itself as a strategic rail freight corridor linking Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Ongoing liberalisation of the rail freight market, combined with substantial government investment, is aimed at shifting freight traffic from road to rail and establishing the country as an international logistics hub. Central to this strategy is the renewal of the locomotive fleet, with ambitions to increase annual freight volumes to around 400,000 containers by 2030, compared with 29,000 containers transported in 2021.
Iñigo Parra, CEO Stadler Valencia said:
“The EURO4001 is the most advanced and powerful diesel-electric locomotive in Europe. We are delighted that it will enable us to make a significant contribution to Turkey’s goal of creating an efficient, interoperable freight transport network that is committed to reducing emissions.”
