TransPennine Express Boosts Wildlife Habitats at Yarm Station

TransPennine Express has completed a significant biodiversity project at Yarm railway station, turning previously underused land into new habitats for wildlife while enhancing the station environment for passengers.

The scheme has introduced a range of planting across the site, including thousands of native bulbs along embankments and the creation of wildflower meadows aimed at supporting pollinators and other species.

Further improvements include the addition of 70 metres of native hedgerow and the planting of 14 different tree species, increasing the ecological diversity of the station and surrounding area.

Wildlife support measures have also been put in place, with bird and bat boxes installed across the site to provide new foraging and nesting opportunities.

Existing woodland areas have been carefully managed as part of the project, allowing ground-level plant life to develop and contributing to a healthier and more balanced natural environment.

Steve Gilder, Environment Delivery Lead at TransPennine Express, said:

"It's fantastic to see the design plans come to life at Yarm Station, with all works now complete in time for plants to flourish and bloom during spring 2026. Not only do these biodiversity improvement projects benefit local wildlife, but they also improve the station environment for our customers and local communities by creating attractive green spaces that everyone can enjoy.”

The initiative forms part of the operator’s wider Good for Nature programme, which aims to enhance biodiversity across its network of stations.
