TransPennine Express Says Farewell To Glasgow Conductor After Four-Decade Career

TransPennine Express has marked the retirement of Glasgow-based conductor Bernie McBride, bringing to a close a railway career spanning 44 years.

Bernie retired in May after more than four decades in the industry, having worked across stations, onboard roles and train driving during a career that began in the British Rail era.

He first joined the railway in 1982 at Falkirk Grahamston station, where his early duties included dealing with customer enquiries. From there, he went on to hold a range of positions across Scotland.

His career included time working in ticket offices at Falkirk and Stirling, before he became a shift leader at Edinburgh Waverley. He later worked as a Retail Quality Supervisor, supporting stations and colleagues across Lothian, Central Scotland and Fife.

Bernie also spent time as a train driver before joining TransPennine Express in 2007, when he became one of the first conductors recruited to the operator’s newly opened Glasgow Central depot.

He remained in that role for almost 20 years, becoming a familiar and respected member of the TPE team.

Reflecting on his career, Bernie said:

“I applied for one of the conductor roles when TPE opened its Glasgow depot and I was lucky enough to be offered a position. It proved to be a fantastic move, and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time on the railway.”

Rosie McNicol, Area Customer Experience Manager at TPE, said:

“Bernie has been a valued and respected member of the team throughout his time with us. His wealth of railway knowledge, professionalism and dedication to both customers and colleagues have made a lasting impact. On behalf of everyone at TPE, I’d like to thank Bernie for his many years of service and wish him a long, happy and well-deserved retirement.”
