Week-Long Closure Confirmed as Nunthorpe Crossing Set for Full Renewal
A major upgrade is planned for Nunthorpe level crossing, with Network Rail set to carry out a full renewal aimed at improving safety for pedestrians, drivers and rail passengers.
The work will take place between Sunday 22 February and Saturday 28 February, during which the existing, life-expired crossing equipment will be removed and replaced. The project includes the installation of a new sliding barrier, an updated operating system and a redesigned road layout with fresh resurfacing.
Network Rail says the improvements will deliver a safer environment for all users of the crossing, while also improving reliability for rail services and providing a smoother surface for vehicles travelling across the tracks.
As a result of the works, train services between Middlesbrough and Whitby will be suspended from Monday 23 to Friday 27 February. Rail replacement buses will run throughout the closure, calling at all stations along the route.
The level crossing on Marton Moor Road will be closed to both vehicles and pedestrians from 19:00 on Sunday 22 February until 05:30 on Saturday 28 February. Signed diversion routes will be in place for road users during this period.
To maintain pedestrian access, Network Rail has arranged a free shuttlebus service operating around the clock. The bus will run approximately every 15 minutes, transporting people safely between either side of the closed crossing throughout the duration of the road closure.
Amelia Fordyce, Network Rail project manager, said:
“We’re fully renewing Nunthorpe level crossing to improve safety and reliability for everyone using the railway and the road. The existing crossing needs to be replaced due to the age and condition of the current equipment, and we’ve scheduled the work for half-term week to minimise disruption as much as we can. We appreciate there will be some disruption while the work takes place and thank the community for their patience and understanding.”
