Brazen St Pancras Shoplifter Jailed After Swift British Transport Police Action
A prolific shoplifter who repeatedly targeted the same clothing store has been arrested, charged, and sentenced within 48 hours following swift action by British Transport Police (BTP).
Zenith Lawrence, 24, of no fixed address, was sentenced to 12 weeks in prison at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Monday 19 January after admitting four theft offences.
The arrest followed a plain-clothes policing operation at St Pancras International station on Saturday 17 January, aimed at tackling retail theft. At around 3pm, an officer recognised a man believed to be connected to a recent theft at the station’s All Saints clothing store, which had taken place on Wednesday 14 January.
Uniformed officers were alerted and quickly detained Lawrence. Subsequent CCTV review showed him entering the store and leaving with two jumpers and two leather jackets, items valued at close to £1,300.
Further checks linked Lawrence to three additional thefts at the same shop. On 4 December, he stole a jumper. On 15 January, he returned to steal two women’s leather jackets and a bag, before brazenly coming back just two hours later to take three men’s leather jackets.
Across all four incidents, the total value of the stolen goods amounted to nearly £3,800.
Lawrence was arrested and declined to answer questions during his police interview.
Officers rapidly compiled extensive CCTV footage and witness evidence, which was submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS). This allowed Lawrence to be charged and remanded to court, where he pleaded guilty.
BTP Inspector Ben Payne said:
“I’d like to recognise the awareness and proactivity of our officers in identifying Lawrence, then quickly working to link him to further offences. This fast-paced investigative work allowed us to arrest, charge, and bring him before the courts in just two days. His imprisonment demonstrates our determination to tackle theft across the railway network. By using targeted patrols, intelligence and thorough investigative work, we are ensuring offenders are identified quickly and held accountable, sending a clear message that theft on the railway will not be tolerated.”
Anyone who is the victim of, or witnesses, an offence on the railway network is urged to text British Transport Police on 61016 or call 0800 40 50 40.
