GWR and TfW boost services ahead of packed Principality Stadium fixture

Rail passengers planning to travel to Cardiff for Wales’ clash with Argentina on Sunday are being urged to reserve seats early, with operators confirming extra services for the busy match day.

Kick-off at the Principality Stadium is scheduled for 15:10, and Great Western Railway (GWR) has announced it will run six additional trains into Cardiff ahead of the game to help manage demand. In total, 30 services will operate before kick-off, offering more than 14,500 seats to supporters arriving from across the region.

All pre-match services will require seat reservations, and fans are advised to book ahead to avoid missing out. Stadium gates will open early, and rail operators are encouraging those attending to travel in good time to avoid last-minute crowds.

Following the final whistle at around 17:00, rail teams will again step up capacity, with five extra services planned to help passengers leave the city smoothly. Across the evening, 22 trains will run, providing over 11,000 seats for the return journey. Unlike the inbound services, reservations will not be necessary for travel home, though a queuing system will be in place at Cardiff Central to ensure safe boarding.

GWR Customer Services Director Rachel Geliamassi said:
“We’re delighted to support these autumn international fixtures at the Principality Stadium, helping as many people as possible watch the finals – and proving that train is the very best way to travel.
“While we run additional services to cater for everyone who wants to travel, these are expected to be busy immediately before and after the matches, so plan ahead, check your journey beforehand and bear in mind if you are travelling to Cardiff on Sunday morning, you’ll need to reserve a seat.”

Transport for Wales (TfW) has confirmed it will also operate extra services both before and after the match to support passenger demand.
