A new generation of electric trains for Bulgaria has been unveiled as Škoda Group presented the first completed unit of a major fleet order aimed at modernising the country’s railway network.

The four-car train was officially introduced in the presence of representatives from the Ministry of Transport and Communications of Bulgaria, marking a key milestone in a programme that will see 25 units delivered. Before arriving in Bulgaria, the train underwent dynamic and safety testing in the Czech Republic, with further trials on Bulgarian infrastructure beginning during the week of 23 March 2026.

The project has progressed rapidly, with the first trains completed just 14 months after the contract was signed. This is notable given the level of customisation involved, including bespoke exterior styling, redesigned interiors, adapted passenger information systems and the integration of signalling and safety technologies.

Built to meet European technical standards, each train provides seating for more than 300 passengers and is capable of speeds up to 160 km/h. The units operate on a 25 kV AC overhead system and are equipped with ETCS Level 2 signalling, air conditioning, Wi-Fi, onboard CCTV and dedicated spaces for passengers with reduced mobility, pushchairs and bicycles. A partially low-floor design ensures easier access for all users.

The agreement extends beyond manufacturing, with a 15-year maintenance package included. This will be delivered directly by Škoda Group within Bulgaria, providing long-term operational support and predictable servicing costs. The total value of the contract exceeds €500 million.

The trains are based on the established RegioPanter platform, already in use across several European countries, and form part of a wider effort to improve reliability and passenger experience on Bulgarian railways.

Petr Novotný, CEO of Škoda Group said:

“Today’s presentation of the first train marks an important step in one of the most significant railway projects that Škoda Group has been implementing in Southeast Europe in recent years. In total, we are manufacturing 25 trains for Bulgaria based on the proven RegioPanter platform, which already serves millions of passengers in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and more recently also on broad-gauge networks in Latvia and Estonia—both in fully electric and battery versions. We are pleased to cooperate with the Bulgarian Ministry of Transport in delivering its railway modernisation plan and in helping to make rail transport more attractive to passengers through modern rolling stock. Bulgaria has long been an important market for us, and this project confirms that Czech technologies can play a key role in the modernisation of its railway sector,”

Korman Ismailov, Minister of Transport and Communications of Bulgaria said:

“Bulgarian railways play a key role in connecting regions, supporting the country’s economic development, and ensuring accessible mobility for citizens. Therefore, the modernization of rail transport is among the state’s strategic priorities,”
