LNER Hero Named: Veteran Staff Member Samir Zitouni Praised for Bravery in Train Attack
A long-serving LNER employee who intervened during Saturday’s attack on a train has been praised for his bravery. Samir Zitouni, 48, known to colleagues and customers as Sam, has worked with the operator for more than 20 years as a Customer Experience Host, dedicated to supporting passengers onboard services.
Sam was working on the 18:25 Doncaster to London King’s Cross service when the incident unfolded and passengers came under threat. Witnesses and police credited his swift actions with protecting others, with the British Transport Police saying his response was “nothing short of heroic,” and that it had saved multiple lives.
In a message shared by his family, they thanked the public for the support received and expressed pride in Sam's actions. They said:
“We have been deeply touched by the outpouring of love and kindness shown to Sam, and by the many well wishes for his recovery. The care provided by the hospital and the support from his colleagues at LNER has been incredible. We are immensely proud of Sam and his courage. The police called him a hero on Saturday evening, but to us – he’s always been a hero.”
LNER Managing Director David Horne also recognised Sam's bravery and the actions of staff onboard. He said:
“In a moment of crisis, Sam did not hesitate as he stepped forward to protect those around him. His actions were incredibly brave, and we are so proud of him, and of all our colleagues who acted with such courage that evening. Our thoughts and prayers remain with Sam and his family. We will continue to support them and wish him a full and speedy recovery.”
Sam remains in hospital as he continues his recovery, with colleagues and the wider rail community offering their ongoing support. The company said it will continue to assist his family as the investigation into the incident continues.
