Lumo Completes Major Fleet Upgrade Ahead of Glasgow Route Launch
Lumo, the all-electric open access rail operator linking London with North-East England and Edinburgh, has completed a major upgrade across its entire fleet. The refurbishment refreshed 1,930 seats across five 125mph Hitachi-built trains ahead of the launch of Lumo’s extended route to Glasgow Queen Street this December. Selected 2026 advance tickets are available from £33.90 when booked directly.
The upgrade introduces brighter, more durable seat fabric while retaining Lumo’s signature electric blue colour scheme. Passengers continue to enjoy generous legroom, winged headrests, individual table lights, and large tray tables. The improvements form part of Lumo’s ongoing commitment to comfort, choice, and sustainable travel.
Jen Clare, Service Delivery Director at Lumo, said: "Completing this seat upgrade across our fleet is a significant step in enhancing the onboard experience for our customers, ahead of our Glasgow service launching this December. It reflects our ongoing investment in comfort and sustainability and demonstrates our ambition to make rail travel the preferred choice for more people."
The milestone comes as Lumo approaches its fifth year of operation, contributing to an additional 1.4 million journeys annually and encouraging travellers to choose its low-cost, low-carbon alternative to air travel or driving. Lumo’s electric trains are 95% more environmentally friendly than equivalent flights, with fares between London and Edinburgh averaging around £55. The company was also recently awarded the ServiceMark Accreditation by the Institute of Customer Service for excellent customer service and dedication to ongoing improvement.
