Major Transport Hub Transformation Unveiled at Chippenham Station
A £2.3 million upgrade at Chippenham station has been completed, delivering a range of improvements aimed at making the station easier to use for passengers, cyclists and the wider community.
The project has focused on transforming the station’s south side forecourt into a modern transport hub while preserving the character of the station’s Grade II listed surroundings. The work introduces improved facilities for public transport, better access for pedestrians and cyclists, and enhanced passenger amenities.
One of the key additions is a new enclosed cycle hub with space for 200 bicycles, designed to encourage more people to travel to the station by bike. Bus capacity has also been expanded to support better connections between rail and local bus services, while a new taxi rank has been positioned close to the platform exit for easier access.
The forecourt has also been redesigned to improve traffic flow. A widened entrance removes a previous bottleneck at the station approach, helping to reduce delays for vehicles using the pick-up and drop-off area.
Accessibility has been a major focus of the redevelopment. Step-free ramp access and improved disabled parking facilities have been introduced to make the station easier to navigate for passengers with reduced mobility.
The redesigned area also features new planting, trees and seating to create a more welcoming and secure environment for travellers. An expanded pedestrian forecourt with natural stone paving has been installed to complement the station’s historic setting.
New walking routes now link the station directly with Chippenham College and the town centre. These improvements build on earlier work which saw a new bridge with lifts installed to connect both sides of the railway.
Tom Pierpoint, Industry Programme Director for Network Rail and Great Western Railway said:
“This transformation creates a station Chippenham can be proud of, providing modern facilities to support the growing community and the local economy. Continuing to invest in the railway, the new cycle hub and improved bus connections support sustainable travel, while enhanced accessibility for all users ensures the station works for everyone it serves.”
Cllr Ian Thorn, Leader of Wiltshire Council, said:
“By working together, we’ve delivered upgrades that strengthen Wiltshire’s transport network and make everyday travel easier for residents, businesses and visitors. These improvements reinforce our commitment to sustainable transport and long-term investment in the county. This shows this power of joint working to create real, lasting benefits for all.”
Chippenham MP Sarah Gibson, who helped officially unveil the new facilities, said:
“These improvements at Chippenham station are a fantastic investment in our town and those who rely on the railway. The new cycle hub, improved bus facilities and better accessibility will make a real difference for commuters, and visitors alike. It’s great to see partners working together to deliver a station that is safer, greener and fit for the future. I’m proud to support this project and the benefits it will bring to our community.”
