Police have arrested a man accused of pushing a commuter onto the tracks at a Brooklyn subway station, following an investigation by the New York Police Department.

Officers detained Ivan Negron, 39, at around 12.45pm on Thursday after spotting him walking through Union Square station. Police said officers recognised him from surveillance images that had been released earlier as part of the investigation.

Negron has been charged with attempted assault in connection with an incident that allegedly took place at about 5am on Sunday at the 36th Street station in Sunset Park. According to police, a 35-year-old man was standing on the southbound R train platform when Negron approached and pushed him onto the tracks.

Investigators said the two men did not know each other and that Negron did not speak to the victim before the alleged assault. Emergency responders attended the scene and took the victim to NYU Langone Hospital–Brooklyn, where he was treated for minor injuries.

Police said Negron is currently homeless. As of Friday morning, information regarding his legal representation had not been made available, and he was awaiting an appearance at Brooklyn Criminal Court.

Authorities said the incident was one of at least four violent episodes reported across New York City’s transit system over the holiday weekend.
