No Trains Between Chester And Llandudno Junction During June Engineering Works
Passengers travelling on the North Wales railway are being warned to check before they travel as essential engineering work closes the line between Chester and Llandudno Junction over the weekend of 6 and 7 June.
The closure will begin in the early hours of Saturday 6 June, with the railway due to reopen in the early hours of Monday 8 June. During this period, no trains will run between Chester and Llandudno Junction.
Transport for Wales says the closure is needed so teams can carry out maintenance and upgrade work with uninterrupted access to the railway. The work forms part of the continued Network North Wales upgrade programme and follows the recent introduction of a new timetable.
Transport for Wales and Network Rail will be carrying out improvements at several locations along the route, including:
• Flint – Drainage improvements to help reduce the risk of flooding and improve the long-term resilience of the railway
• Pensarn – Foundation and site preparation work ahead of the installation of a new accessible footbridge
• Rhyl (Saturday night only) – Sleeper replacements to maintain track quality and support smoother, more reliable journeys for passengers
Passengers should expect:
• No rail services will run between Chester and Llandudno Junction during the closure
• Replacement transport will be in place to keep passengers moving
The work is intended to support reliability on the North Wales railway following the recent timetable uplift, which Transport for Wales says has allowed passengers to benefit from 50% more train services. It will also support future accessibility improvements and help keep the railway safe and resilient for passengers, staff and freight services.
Services to Manchester Airport, Cardiff Central and Liverpool Lime Street will start and finish at Chester during the closure. Services from Holyhead will terminate at Llandudno Junction.
Rail replacement services are planned between Llandudno Junction and Chester, running roughly every half an hour on Saturday and every hour on Sunday. Ticket acceptance will also be in place with Arriva Bus.
Colin Lea, Planning and Performance Director at Transport for Wales said:
