North Downs Line Track Upgrade to Boost Reliability Between Reading and Wokingham
Network Rail will carry out a major infrastructure upgrade this coming weekend on the North Downs line, replacing the section of track that connects it to the Great Western main line between Reading and Wokingham. The three-day closure, from Saturday 25 to Monday 27 October, represents a key step in improving reliability and capacity for passengers travelling across the region.
During the work, alternative travel arrangements will ensure continued connectivity. Great Western Railway services will run between Wokingham and Redhill or Gatwick Airport, while South Western Railway will operate between Wokingham and London Waterloo. Replacement bus services will link Reading and Wokingham, with journey times expected to take around 15 minutes longer than usual. Passengers are being urged to plan ahead.
The upgrade forms part of a broader programme to modernise the North Downs line, paving the way for more frequent services and improved long-term performance. Despite the closure, Gatwick Airport will remain fully accessible by rail, with Southern, Thameslink, and Gatwick Express services continuing to operate as normal.
Andy Gallaugher, GWR Station Manager for the North Downs line, said: “We’re investing in the railway’s future. While we know disruption is never welcome, this critical work will deliver real benefits for passengers in the long term. Services to Gatwick Airport remain uninterrupted, and our replacement bus service ensures connectivity throughout the closure period.”
Mark Goodall, Network Rail’s Wessex Route Director, added: “Half term provides us with the opportunity to minimise passenger impact while delivering this essential upgrade. Our teams will work around the clock to complete these works safely and efficiently. We’re sorry for the disruption, but passengers will benefit from a more resilient network that keeps them moving.”
